Location: Hyannis, MA

Today, Rep. Bill Keating applauded the Department of Labor for awarding a total of $2,471,478 in Workforce Training Grants to Cape Cod Community College. This funding will allow the College to enhance its FAA-certified airplane maintenance training program, which provides the airline industry with highly-skilled technicians in airframe and power plant repair and certification.

"Cape Cod Community College has identified a critical need in the airline industry and has met this challenge by developing its unique FAA-certified airplane maintenance training program," said Rep. Keating. "This funding will allow the College to accelerate development of this important program, which in turn will provide valuable jobs to our region and essential resources to the airline industry at large."

"We are extremely pleased with the strong support of Congressman Keating, and Governor Deval Patrick, to make this entirely new program possible," said Michael Wahlers, Aviation Maintenance Program Coordinator at Cape Cod Community College. "It has great potential to make a major positive financial impact on the Cape, and well beyond. The College has identified aviation workforce opportunities for the Cape area, the Eastern Seaboard, and notes Dept. of Labor reports identifying national needs for thousands of highly trained technicians for many years to come.

"We have received enthusiastic support from numerous levels of the aviation industry, key among them Cape Air, with Jet Blue, Delta, MassPort, and others. This Airframe & Power plant course will be a 12-month, accelerated program, leading to FAA certification. Initially we expect students to enroll from the Cape region, ultimately evolving it into a "destination" program, attracting students from all over the country. We've already had significant interest from those working in the industry, as well as soon-to-be high school graduates, and current military personnel from the nearby Joint Base Cape Cod," Wahlers added.
